Mileage
Equipped with variable valve timing - a "first" for a sport-utility vehicle - the 3.0-liter V-6 VVT-i engine develops an impressive 220 horsepower and 222 pound-feet of torque. For a compact SUV, that's enough to produce a swift sendoff under nearly all conditions. An unusual gear selector controls the automatic
transmission. Topping that console is a video screen, which displays miles-per-gallon, outside and inside temperatures, time, radio frequency, and details on the climate-control system. One small defect was noted: the transmission's Power/ECT/Snow button is somewhat hidden by the gearshift when in Drive. An exceptionally large glovebox contains a CD changer, mounted above the storage space. Even under hard acceleration or climbing a steep grade, the engine is remarkably quiet. Gas mileage is in the hopper. EPA mileage: 15 city, 18 highway.
