Grand Cherokee sales had been sliding in recent years, aggravated by an aging design, new competition, and increasing market jitters. But sales returned to the plus side in 2002, albeit by a slim year-to-year margin of just 621 units. If an SUV could feel like a sports car, the 4.7 litre V8-equipped Grand Cherokee is the closest thing. It is a classic. Introduced more than a decade ago and redesigned five years ago, it lacks the refinement found in the latest wave of SUVs. It ranks among the best-selling SUVs in America. Jeep sells about 220,000 Grand Cherokees a year. That's a whole big bunch. Grand Cherokee sales outrank such popular nameplates as Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Expedition, and Durango. It is a solid vehicle that can go anywhere. It can tackle steep slopes, slog through mud, and plow through snow. 2006 2007 the Grand Cherokee receives a face-lift that includes a restyled front fascia. The Grand Cherokee is available in three trims - Laredo, Limited and Overland in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configuration.
On the Laredo and Limited, a six-cylinder 4.0L 195-hp engine is standard, while a 4.7L 235-hp V8 engine is optional. Also available for the Limited is a high-output 4.7L 265-hp V8 engine Standard on the Overland. Along with a new front fascia the Grand Cherokee also receives no-charge roof rail crossbars and two new exterior colors - Deep Lava Red and Midnight Blue. Enhanced safety features include standard LATCH child safety seat anchors, available ceiling-mounted side curtain air bags, and optional tire pressure monitoring system. Interior of new Grand Cherokee has Easy-to-use radio and climate controls mounted close to driver. Handy steering-wheel audio controls optional on 4WD Laredo, standard on Limited and Overland.
